Tomato Affirmations

I’ve been growing a vegetable and herb garden for a couple of months now, and the tomatoes are just beginning to ripen. These tomatoes happen to be a luminous yellow color, but taste like a cherry tomato. The harvests on the vegetables are slow, unlike the herbs. For example, I’ve picked mint to garnish about ten different beverages now, (highly recommend), and it has tripled in size leaving mint for many more mocktails. The basil too, started out wilted and sad, but has soon grown strong roots. The tomato plant is huge, one of my biggest plants, and now requires a trellis, which I make-shifted from a toy sword. However, as one might imagine, the fruit production is quite slow, which brought me to creating tomato affirmations.

I want my harvests to feel special, and feel worthy of all of the time and effort that gets put into my garden, so I’ve decided: every time I harvest a beautiful, golden tomato, I will speak affirmations over it before consuming. I plucked two of them off of the plant this morning, the rich smell staining my fingers, and washed them in the sink. I brought them upstairs to the desk that I only visit when I’m doing something sacred, and cleared the space. I searched for some notebook paper, and got writing.

“Tomato affirmations: May these two tomatoes bring me connection and effortless flow, reciprocation on all levels, and good dating energy. May the heavy tasks get done, and the interviews go well. May I stay healthy and joyous.”

Rather than just writing these things down, I spoke them out loud over the glowing fruit, then plucked the stems and ate them. I really liked the act of speaking the words out loud, even though it seemed slightly unnatural. A few minutes later, as I was getting ready for my day, I actually heard the affirmations ringing in my ears. I felt a boosted sense of confidence and a heart-pang of the good stuff: self-love. Not to mention the aftertaste of my tomatoes was a nice reminder of the efforts I had poured both into myself and into my garden.

I hope that you can also find ways to speak to yourself kindly. A big part of growth is acknowledging what you want and need to see happen, and perhaps writing it down. I also appreciate this method because you can look back on your desires and see just how much things can change for the better. A few months ago, I was in a terribly dark place. I didn’t know if I was going to get better or not. My life did a 180, and now I am left rebuilding, tending to roots, and picking new and unexpected fruits. I sometimes miss my old life, but simultaneously feel gratitude towards my new world and the healing that has undergone for me to even be here.

Thank you for tuning in, and I’ll see you next time!
